The workshop was largely attended by women from all walks of life, including teachers, lawyers, media persons, doctors, psychiatrists, LHVs and students.
"We are in partnership with Pakistan for the last two decades for elimination of drug abuse prevention and decline of demand of illegal drugs within the country", US envoy said and added that this co-operation of the two sides would continue till complete elimination of drugs from the society.
Terming the drug abuse as global menace, he called upon people round the globe to feel responsibility and join hands to eradicate this menace.
"Drugs empower criminals undermine security and stability of countries and destroy their economy besides triggering other social problems such as AIDS and violence," he warned.
He said that drug abuse particularly among women is a topic that often gets swept under the rug. A Stigma is attached with the problem making the people feel ashamed to admit it even exists, he added.
Stressing upon joint responsibilities, he said, "the thinking that drug does not concern me or it is a problem that afflicts only the poor and uneducated.
"Drugs have no respect for social, gender and economic boundaries and can tear the fabric of any society. They kill rich and poor, they kill literate and illiterate, they kill our children", he said adding that every individual should fight against this menace at all levels including home, community and government.
The US ambassador commended the efforts being made by ANF for prevention of drug abuse and reduction of the drug demand in production. "US and Pakistan are on partnership for the last two decades and it will continue with the same spirit", he added.
He said that the strategy addresses both the supply and demand sides. On supply side drug criminal will always try to find a door to push through their illegal activities. But, he added, "We need to keep those doors shut by staying one step ahead of them".
Addressing the participants the Director General, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) Major General Nadeem Ahmed said that the role of women in prevention of drug abuse is very important.
He called upon the women to come forward and help the government's efforts in rooting out drug abuse from the society. He said that women could not only create awareness but also play a vital role in rehabilitation of the drug addicts and their re-integration back in to the society.
